Healing Hearts of WNY to Support Families

Hearts of WNY is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization committed to supporting families who have experienced, or may experience the loss of a child.  Thanks to the generous support of The Butler Family Foundation along with support from Georgetown Capital, Healing Hearts of WNY was created to provide continuous support and empowerment through counseling, diversionary activities, education, networking, and community outreach programs. In addition to various family centered events, parents are able to share stories, and connect with other families who have lost of a child. According to co-founder Chuck Collard who lost his daughter Carly to cancer in 2002, Healing Hearts will provide critical services and stability for family members confronted with the tragic circumstances surrounding the loss of a child. “After Carly’s passing, we soon met other parents trying cope with a loss, and realized Healing Hearts of WNY was needed to provide much needed support at various stages of the grieving process.” For parents who have experienced the death of a child there is no more devastating loss. It is heartbreak like no other. Parental grief is different from other losses–it is intensified, exaggerated and lengthened. What makes this type of death particularly challenging is that the death of a child is a contradiction to everything that we believe to true about life; a child’s death disrupts the normal order of life. Parents are supposed to die before their children. When a child dies, many feel as though they have lost their future.

Several families are inspired to support community initiatives in memory of their child, but often neglect to understand, and care for their basic needs. With Healing Hearts of WNY, families have the opportunity to network with one another as they try to find some sense of normalcy along the way.  In September, Healing Hearts will launch CafeWell in partnership with Welltok Communications, an on line portal for families to interact with one another.  For additional information on programs or on ways to help, please select contact us on the web site. A tax deductible donation can be made on line.

Went to a bereavement camp and was so good to just be with other families that have lost a child to cancer. It is great that those of us in WNY can gettogether to share…
